Context
The Higgins Pumas play in Division 1 of the ABSSA league in Brussels. Like most amateur teams, they were using TeamSnap for logistics — but the tool didn't cover detailed stats or the rituals specific to a team that's known each other for years: who brings the balls, who washes the kits, who drives after the match.
The idea: build an app made for them, not for every team in the world.
The challenge
Deliver a complete PWA, installable on any phone, across 16 functional screens — without players needing to create an account or remember a password. Simple enough for the least tech-savvy player on the squad, powerful enough that admins need nothing else.
The approach
Mobile-first architecture with Next.js App Router and Supabase (PostgreSQL + anonymous Auth + Realtime + Edge Functions). Authentication via name + shared team code: zero onboarding friction, zero password management.
The 16 screens cover the full lifecycle of a season:
- RSVP attendance in real time (Supabase Realtime)
- Live D1 standings, updated every week via a scheduled Edge Function scraping the league's public data
- Player stats: scorers, assists, attendance, Man of the Match, Dick of the Match
- Exportable match sheet
- Chore rotation (balls, kits) with fairness counter
- Shared contributions and expenses
- Carpooling for away matches
- Web Push notifications (VAPID) — Android and iOS 16.4+ in installed mode
The app runs entirely on free tiers: Vercel (front) + Supabase (back). Operating cost: €0/month.
Results
An app adopted by the entire squad in its first week. Admins enter stats directly from their phone after the match. The standings update themselves. Nobody argues about chores anymore.
WKND Sport is designed as a reusable platform: other teams can deploy their own instance with their team code and visual identity.
